Class Descriptions

Foundation: Building Blocks for Agility

Dogs entering this class will be introduced to skills essential for agility—focus, self-control, drive and motivation. Handlers will learn and develop proficiency in positive training methods that are needed to develop these skills in their dogs, such as the principles of operant conditioning (also known as positive reinforcement), training with and without a clicker, shaping, targeting, effective use of food and toys, and other valuable techniques that create not just a great agility dog, but a wonderful pet and companion. We will use games to create fabulous recalls, enthusiasm for working, and a dog that thoroughly enjoys agility and learning. Our individualized group approach allows dogs and handlers to progress at their own rate.

This class is valuable for dogs with no previous exposure to agility and dogs that may have trouble focusing, and are either over-stimulated by other dogs, people and agility training, or are overwhelmed by the setting and perform slowly, reluctantly or shut down in a training environment.

Dogs with aggression or barking issues must be evaluated by us prior to registering.

Equipment needed:

  • Crate, soft or wire, or ex-pen

  • Clicker

  • Assortment of small easily chewable treats of low, medium and high value, e.g. cheerios (low), kibble or cheese (medium), steak or beef (high) (depending on dog)

  • 4 to 6 ft leash and flat buckle collar or harness

  • Water & bowl (water for human as well)

  • Chair

  • Other small props, such as targets and mats may also be required from time to time, but will be discussed as and when needed

Pre-Novice

  • Contact Training Board
